Sure, The FitBit is Cool — but Does It Record Your Sexual Activity?

Since its release in 2008, the Fitbit has taken the market by storm. As of 2016, it is still one of the most popular activity and fitness trackers, and one of the most useful! Thanks to the fact that it tracks calories burned, average heart rate, food intake, total body weight, sleep habits, and more, it has become a staple among fitness enthusiasts who want more control over their lives.

But does the Fitbit record EVERY type of activity? Specifically, does it record the sort of "adult-only" activity that takes place in your bedroom? When the product launched in 2008, it was easy to add sex to your activity log. There was even an option for it in the drop-down menu!

Then, back in 2011, it was discovered that Fitbit recorded users' sexual activity, but then posted the information online. Many of the users' activity logs and profiles were set to "public access" by default, meaning random people were able to see whether users engaged in "mild to moderate", "passive, light effort", or "active and vigorous" sexual activity. Thankfully, the company responded by hiding all the user activity records.

A few months later, Fitbit released a statement saying that no sexual activity will be tracked. While "sexual activity" was once an option available to users, they had to create their own "custom activity" in order to add sex to their list of daily activities.

But it seems people are still finding a way to track their sexual activity with Fitbit. In 2014, a reporter published an article on Bustle describing how many calories sexual activity burned. You guessed it, she used her Fitbit to calculate how many calories she burned during:

  • Masturbation (5 to 6 calories)
  • Oral sex (8 to 9 calories)
  • Missionary position (13 to 20 calories)
  • Doggy style (24 calories)

In 2015, a Reddit user posted a graph detailing her heart rate during sexual activity. She claimed that the Fitbit "started tracking her heart rate after 20 minutes of foreplay." (Source: Independent) Over the following nine minutes of activity, the Fitbit recorded the way her body responded to the various positions she tried, as well as the response to climax.

So, as it turns out, Fitbit DOES record sexual activity. However, as with sex, you have to put in the work if you want to see the results!

Fitbit will not automatically calculate the number of calories burned during sex, nor will it allow you to log your sexual activity automatically. In order to log the activity, you have to create your own "custom activity" and input the details manually.

But it will track your heart rate and calories burned for a specific period of time. If you want to know how many calories you burn during sex, all you have to do is set the Fitbit to start tracking just before you "get jiggy with it", and stop the tracking the moment you're done. You'll be able to access your Fitbit account to see just how much of an effect your sex had on your body. Talk about a creative use for a versatile fitness tracker!
